Rakuten referral bonus in 2026: $50 through September 30, then what

Current bonus (verified September 15, 2026)

$50 for the new member, $50 for the referrer. The new member has to join through a referral link and make qualifying purchases totaling at least $50 within 90 days of signing up. Rakuten’s referral terms set the offer period as 12:00 AM PT July 1, 2026 through 11:59 PM PT September 30, 2026.

The fine print, from Rakuten’s terms and its July 10, 2026 blog post on the program:

• The minimum spend always equals the bonus. A $50 promo means $50 of qualifying purchases; the standard $30 bonus needs $30.
• The $50 can be spread across more than one order, as long as the total clears within 90 days.
• Purchases that are returned or cancelled, or that didn’t earn cashback in the first place (gift-card exclusions, excluded categories), don’t count toward the $50.
• There is no cap on the number of referrals or on total referral earnings.
• Both you and the person you refer must live in the 50 states or DC.
• The bonus is added to your next quarterly cashback payment, generally within 60 days of the qualifying purchase. Rakuten says cashback confirmation can take up to 14 weeks.

That last line is the one to internalize. Payments go out February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15. A qualifying purchase in mid-September should pay November 15 if the store confirms it in time, but a slow-confirming store or a late-September order can push it to February.

Bonus history

Rakuten’s own blog now describes the schedule openly: $30 is the standard, $40 shows up around Thanksgiving and Christmas, and $50 is a promotional tier. Doctor of Credit has logged every extension of the current $50 window.

Older tiers of $10 and $20 existed before 2025 but aren’t offered now. The $50 tier has been running for a year with only a nominal deadline, and three extensions is a pattern, not a promise. Treat September 30 as real until Rakuten says otherwise.

Referral bonus vs. the $10 welcome bonus

These are two different offers and they don’t combine.

The $10 after $25 direct offer is Rakuten’s standing welcome bonus for anyone who signs up without a link (TopCashback’s comparison page and CNBC both cite it). There’s no reason to take it while the referral tier is $50, and even at the $30 standard rate the referral is the better deal.

How the bonus is paid, and the two catches

The bonus pays as cash by default, on the same quarterly check or PayPal payment as your regular cashback. Two things about payout that the referral landing pages skip:

You can’t take the bonus as Amex Membership Rewards. Rakuten lets you switch your earning preference to Membership Rewards (1,000 points per $10 of cashback), and that’s the best setting for anyone with an MR-earning Amex card. But the switch applies to cashback going forward, not to the welcome bonus. One Mile at a Time, which has tested this, puts it plainly: the change “won’t apply to the sign-up bonus, but will instead apply to everything else going forward.” Your first $50 arrives as cash.

Bilt is the exception, with a status catch. Rakuten converts an entire open payout period’s cashback to Bilt points, including the bonus, if you switch to Bilt before the period closes. So a new member with a Bilt account can turn the $50 into 5,000 Bilt points. The catch, as Frequent Miler documents: the 1:1 rate only applies to members with Bilt status (Silver and above). Without status the conversion is 2:1, so the $50 becomes 2,500 points, which is worth less than the cash. And Rakuten-earned Bilt points don’t count toward earning that status. If you’re Bilt Blue, take the cash.

The 7-day 10% Cash Back Boost

You’ll see this on older referral pages. It was a direct-signup offer, not a referral variant: 10% bonus cashback (or 10x bonus MR points) on purchases in the first 7 days after joining, capped at $50, and explicitly “not combinable with other offers including the Referral Sign Up Bonus.” Frequent Miler covered it in December 2023, and 20somethingfinance’s page on it now notes it has been replaced by the $50 welcome bonus. I couldn’t find it live on Rakuten’s site as of September 15, 2026. If it comes back, it only beats the referral bonus if you plan to spend $500 or more through the portal in your first week.

What happens on October 1

The promo is scheduled to end at 11:59 PM PT on September 30, 2026. If Rakuten doesn’t extend it, the bonus should drop to the $30 standard, or possibly the $40 holiday tier, since the last quarter of the year is when that historically appears. Rakuten hasn’t announced either. This page will be updated with the new number and terms on October 1, and the changelog at the top will show the date.

If you were going to sign up anyway, the difference between joining on September 29 and October 2 is potentially $20. Not urgent, just arithmetic.

How to get the $50

1. Open a Rakuten account through a referral link before 11:59 PM PT on September 30. You need a US address.
2. If you have a Bilt account with Silver status or higher, switch your earning preference to Bilt now. Otherwise leave it on cash for this first period.
3. Within 90 days, start on Rakuten (site, app, or extension), click through to any store, and buy $50 or more of anything that earns cashback. Check the store page’s exclusions first; gift cards at many stores don’t count. Doctor of Credit’s suggestion is a $50 gift card from Giftcards.com through the portal, which earns cashback there.
4. Confirm the purchase shows as pending in your Rakuten activity within a week. If it doesn’t, file a missing cashback claim; the bonus depends on the purchase tracking.
5. The $50 lands on your next quarterly payment once the purchase confirms, then switch payout to Amex MR if you hold an Amex card.
