The Platinum is not a shopping card. It earns 1 point per dollar at every retailer on this site except airlines booked direct (5x) and hotels prepaid through Amex Travel (5x). What it changes is the credit layer: a $300 hotel credit every six months that only triggers on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings, a $200 Oura credit that only works at ouraring.com, and, since July 2026, a set of Platinum-only Amex Offers (Bose $75, Nordstrom $50) that replaced the old Saks credit. Every one of those credits requires buying direct, which means none of them combine with a reseller's portal rate. The Amex Offers do combine with portals. Knowing which is which is the whole page.

The rule this page exists for

A card credit that requires buying direct never combines with a portal rate at a reseller. That sounds obvious until you’re staring at 10% Rakuten cashback on Oura at Best Buy and a $200 Oura credit on your Platinum and wondering if you can have both. You can’t. The credit triggers only at ouraring.com; the portal pays only at Best Buy. Every retailer page on this site that hits this problem (Oura, Four Seasons, Marriott) is written as a fork for that reason.

Amex Offers are different. They’re statement credits triggered by a transaction with the merchant, so a purchase made through a Rakuten click, at a sale price, with a promo code applied, still triggers the offer. Those stack. The offer tracker at /offers lists which are live.

Where the 5x actually applies

Two places. Flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel earn 5x (capped at $500,000 a year), which covers the Qatar, Virgin Atlantic, Alaska, ITA, and Turkish pages. And hotels prepaid through Amex Travel earn 5x, which covers Four Seasons and the luxury Marriott brands only when you book them through FHR or The Hotel Collection.

Book the same JW Marriott directly on marriott.com through TopCashback and the Platinum earns 1x. That’s the trade on the Marriott page: 4% cashback plus Bonvoy card points on Path A, or 5x plus the $300 credit plus breakfast on Path B, and never both.

Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection

FHR: breakfast for two daily, a $100 property credit, an upgrade and noon check-in when available, guaranteed 4pm checkout, no minimum nights, 5x. The Hotel Collection: a $100 on-property credit applied at checkout (not a statement credit), upgrade when available, two-night minimum, 5x. Both prepaid through Amex Travel; both draw down the $300 semiannual hotel credit.

Amex puts the average FHR benefit at $550 per stay before the credit. Neither program is on any cashback portal.

The Rakuten payout trick

Rakuten lets you take cashback as Membership Rewards at one point per cent. That turns Bergdorf’s 15% into 15 points per dollar and Sixt’s 12% into 12 points per dollar, on top of whatever the card earns. Any MR-earning Amex card qualifies; switch it in Rakuten’s payout settings before the quarter closes. The Rakuten page explains the mechanics.

Membership Rewards in 2026

Twenty transfer partners, most at 1:1 (Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA, British Airways, Delta, Qatar, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, Marriott among them), Hilton at 1:2, Cathay and Emirates at 5:4. Etihad left the program in June 2026. Live bonuses as of September 15: 30% to British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus through September 27, and 30% to Hilton through October 14. A reasonable value is 1 to 2 cents per point; this site uses 1.5.

Vrbo1x. The 2025 Vrbo Amex Offer routed through vrbo.com/amex and excluded third-party cashback, so it did not stack with Rakuten.
Sephora1x plus a live +5 points per dollar in-store offer (capped at 1,500 points, about $22). The Sephora Visa's 4% is the better card here.

FAQ

Does the Platinum earn a bonus at luxury fashion or home retailers?
No. Mr Porter, Bergdorf, Herman Miller, Dyson, Samsung, and everything else in those categories earn 1 point per dollar. The Platinum's value on those pages is a targeted Amex Offer when one is live, and the Rakuten payout trick (take your cashback as Membership Rewards).
What are Platinum-only Amex Offers?
When Amex removed the Saks credit on July 1, 2026 it launched a set of offers visible only to Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders: Nordstrom $50 on $200 (through December 31), TUMI $50 on $250, Bose $75 on $300 (through September 30), Perplexity, Eight Sleep, and several hundred FHR and Hotel Collection property promotions. They work like any Amex Offer: add to the card, pay with it, statement credit. They stack with portals and sale prices.
Does the hotel credit work if I book direct with the hotel?
No. It triggers only on prepaid bookings through Amex Travel in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs. Direct bookings, pay-at-property FHR bookings, and anything booked through a portal don't count. Amex Travel is not on any cashback portal, so the credit and a portal are mutually exclusive by construction.
Does a Platinum Amex Offer stack with Rakuten?
Yes, by default. The offer is triggered by the merchant transaction on the card; the portal is triggered by the click. Neither sees the other. The exceptions are offers whose terms exclude "third-party cashback" (Vrbo's 2025 offer did) and offers that route through Amex Travel (airfare offers), where no portal applies.
What are Membership Rewards worth?
One cent as a statement credit or on Amex Travel, up to about two cents when transferred to an airline partner for a premium-cabin seat. We use 1.5 cents for math on this site. Live transfer bonuses as of mid-September 2026 are 30% to British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus (through September 27) and 30% to Hilton (through October 14).
Should I get the Platinum for the stacks on this site?
Only if you'll use the hotel credit, Resy, Lululemon, and Uber credits anyway. As a pure shopping card it's 1x almost everywhere here; the Amex Gold's 4x at restaurants and the Rakuten-to-MR payout do more for a shopper than the Platinum's fee.
