Marriott is one of the few hotel companies whose own site tracks on the cashback portals, which makes a paid JW Marriott stay stackable: 4% from TopCashback, 16 to 21 points per dollar with a Bonvoy card and elite status, and a seasonal bonus on top. The catch is that the luxury tier is exactly where the fine print bites. Amex Offers exclude JW, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and EDITION. Rakuten excludes the Member Rate. And for the same JW stay, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts often returns more in perks than the portal returns in cash, with no portal at all. This page is a fork: pick a path before you search for dates.

The 30-second answer

The best current Marriott stack (it's a fork)

Rates read from each portal's marriott.com store page. Path A is a standard or prepaid rate booked direct through a portal. Path B is Amex FHR or Chase The Edit, which never track.

Book the standard or prepaid rate, not the Member Rate. Rakuten's Marriott terms exclude Member Flexible Rates outright. The member discount is usually 2 to 5%; the portal is 3 to 4%. Take the one that tracks.

Retailer overview

Marriott International runs about 30 brands, and for this site the ones that matter are the luxury tier: JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, EDITION, W, and The Luxury Collection. They share the Bonvoy program, the co-brand cards, and marriott.com, which is why a single page covers them. They don’t share the fine print. Marriott’s own partners (Amex, Rakuten, TopCashback) carve out some or all of the luxury brands from their offers, and the exclusion lists differ.

The other thing that makes Marriott different from the Four Seasons or Aman tier is that marriott.com is on the portals at all. A paid JW stay can be a real three-layer stack. The work is in knowing which rate plan to book.

Cashback portal strategy

Portal Current rate Cap Key exclusions
TopCashback 4% (1% for Elite+ status members) $200 per booking Points stays, gift cards, member/AAA/corporate rates, Asia-Pacific, named luxury properties including some St. Regis
Rakuten 3% $100 per order Member Flexible Rates, points stays, gift cards, negotiated rates, Asia-Pacific, W Hotels, Bulgari, Design Hotels, Ritz-Carlton Destination Club
Rakuten (Homes & Villas) 1.5% First $6,000 Separate store page for the vacation rental site

Cashback is on the room rate only, not taxes or resort fees, and posts after the stay is completed (Rakuten says within six weeks). Cancel the stay and the cashback disappears. On a $2,000 stay, TopCashback’s higher rate and cap make it the better choice; Rakuten’s $100 cap bites above $3,333.

History: Rakuten ran 5% on Marriott in 2021 and 10% before the pandemic; TopCashback has run 6%. Neither is spiking now.

Credit cards: Bonvoy co-brands, Amex Offers, and the FHR alternative

Bonvoy cards (2026). Every card earns on top of the 10x base points members get for staying:

  • Bonvoy Brilliant (Amex, $650): 6x at Marriott, 85,000-point free night annually, $25/month dining credit, Platinum Elite status, $100 property credit on two-night Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis bookings. Welcome offer of 150,000 points plus $250 through September 30, 2026.
  • Bonvoy Bevy (Amex, $250) and Bountiful (Chase, $250): 6x, Gold Elite.
  • Bonvoy Boundless (Chase, $95): 6x, 35,000-point free night, Silver Elite.
  • Bonvoy Bold (Chase, $0): 3x, Silver Elite.

Points were worth roughly 0.7 to 0.8 cents each in mid-2026. Brilliant with Platinum status returns about 21 points per dollar (10 base plus 5 elite bonus plus 6 card), or roughly 15% back in points.

Amex Offers and Chase Offers. Chase has run a Marriott offer roughly quarterly (10% back on $100+, $50 cap, US hotels paid direct; the latest expired August 31, 2026). Amex ran $150 back on $375 from April to July 2026, targeted, and excluded JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, EDITION, W, and The Luxury Collection. A card-linked offer is a statement credit, so it stacks with the portal and the points when it applies.

Path B: Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and Chase Sapphire Reserve's The Edit. Both book luxury Marriott properties at the direct rate with a $100 property credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade when available, and 4pm checkout (FHR needs one night; The Edit needs two). Neither tracks on any portal. FHR stays at JW properties have been reported to earn Bonvoy points and elite nights, but Marriott's terms are silent, so don't count on it for a status run. For a three-night JW stay the perks are typically worth $400 to $500; the portal on the same stay is worth $60 to $80. Pick B unless you won't use the perks.

Bonvoy program mechanics

  • Elite tiers: Silver at 10 nights, Gold at 25, Platinum at 50 (50% points bonus), Titanium at 75 (75%), Ambassador at 100 nights plus $23,000 spend. Unchanged in 2026.
  • Award pricing: dynamic, up 5 to 10% in 2026 with luxury flagships hit hardest. Fifth night free on award stays still applies.
  • Member Rate: usually 2 to 5% off, but Rakuten excludes Member Flexible Rates. The portal beats it on most stays.
  • Refer a friend: live at marriott.com/loyalty/earn/reward-a-friend. 2,000 points per stay for up to five stays per referral, five referrals a year, 50,000-point cap.
  • Promotions: fall 2026 global promo runs September 22 to November 22 (1,500 points per two-night stay, 4,500 at resorts; register by November 13). Resort code B9248 gives 5,000 points per night on three-plus-night stays at 113 resorts through June 27, 2027.
  • Bonvoy Escapes: 20% off weekend stays on a two-week cycle, prepaid and nonrefundable. JW Marriott properties appear; Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and EDITION are excluded.

Common exclusions and gotchas

  • Member Flexible Rates void Rakuten cashback; book standard or prepaid
  • Points stays, gift cards, corporate and AAA rates, and Asia-Pacific properties earn no cashback on either portal
  • Resort fees and taxes don’t earn cashback
  • Cashback posts only after a completed stay; cancellations pay nothing
  • Amex Offers on Marriott have excluded every luxury brand; read the terms
  • OTA bookings (Expedia, Booking) earn no Bonvoy points or elite nights
  • FHR and The Edit bookings don’t track on portals

Booking sequence

  1. Pick the path. Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis, or a JW stay where you'll use breakfast and the credit: Path B, book through Amex Travel or Chase Travel, skip the portal. JW stay where the perks don't matter: Path A, continue.
  2. Register for any live Bonvoy promotion before you book.
  3. Check Chase Offers and Amex Offers for a Marriott offer and read its brand exclusions.
  4. Clean browser session, ad blockers off. Activate TopCashback (4%, $200 cap) or Rakuten (3%, $100 cap) and click through to marriott.com.
  5. Sign into Bonvoy. Select the standard or prepaid rate, not the Member Rate. Confirm it's not flagged as a negotiated or promotional plan.
  6. Pay with the Bonvoy card that earns 6x, or the card holding a live offer if it's worth more.
  7. Cashback shows pending within a few days and pays after checkout. Don't cancel and rebook; it resets the tracking.
Worked example

$2,000 three-night JW Marriott, prepaid standard rate, Brilliant card, Platinum status

TopCashback 4% on the room rate$80.00
Bonvoy 21x (10 base + 5 elite + 6 card) = 42,000 pts~$315.00
Fall promo, resort stay, 4,500 pts~$34.00
Total back~$429 (21%)

Path B on the same stay: $100 property credit, three breakfasts for two (~$150), upgrade and late checkout, plus the same points if they post. No cashback. Roughly $250 more in value if you use the perks.

FAQ

Does Rakuten work at JW Marriott?
JW Marriott isn't named in Rakuten's exclusion list (which covers W Hotels, Bulgari, Design Hotels, and Ritz-Carlton Destination Club). What is excluded is the Member Flexible Rate, points stays, corporate and AAA rates, and Asia-Pacific properties. Book a standard or prepaid rate and it should track; we haven't verified Member Prepay specifically.
Do I still earn Bonvoy points through a portal?
Yes. The portal tracks the click; Bonvoy tracks the stay. Points, elite nights, and card multipliers all post normally on a direct booking regardless of how you arrived.
Amex FHR or direct through the portal?
For a JW stay where the FHR rate matches the direct rate, FHR's $100 property credit, daily breakfast for two, room upgrade when available, and 4pm checkout add up to $400 to $500 in value, versus $60 to $80 from a portal. FHR bookings at Marriott have been reported to still earn Bonvoy points and elite nights. For a stay where the perks don't matter (you're out all day, breakfast is included anyway), take the portal.
Why don't Amex Offers help at JW?
The 2026 Marriott Amex Offer ($150 back on $375, April to July) excluded JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, EDITION, W, and The Luxury Collection. Chase's recurring Marriott offer (10% back, $50 cap) has been US hotels paid direct, without a published brand exclusion. Read the terms every time.
Do award stays earn cashback?
No. Both portals exclude points bookings. Cash plus points is unverified; assume no.
What about Homes & Villas?
It has its own Rakuten store page at 1.5%, capped at the first $6,000. It's a separate booking site with separate terms.
