Retailer overview
Vrbo is Expedia Group’s whole-home vacation rental marketplace, the older of the two big platforms and the one that never went into shared rooms. For a stacker the important fact is structural: Airbnb does not participate in cashback portals and Vrbo participates in all of them. The same house often appears on both, and on Vrbo it can be 6 to 12% cheaper once the layers are counted.
Cashback on Vrbo pays only after the stay completes, so the cancellation policy matters more here than on any retail stack.
Cashback portal strategy
| Portal | Current rate | Base | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TopCashback | 6% | 1-2% | Calculated on the item price only, excluding taxes and fees. Pending in about a week; pays after the stay. |
| Rakuten | 3% | 1% | Dropped from 6% on September 16, 2026. Pays “within a month after travel has been completed.” Excludes bookings under $20 and refer-a-friend codes. |
| Capital One Shopping | 1% | Rental price only. | |
| BeFrugal | 7% (12% boosted) | Worth comparing on the day. |
The 6% is a promotional window, not the resting rate. Both portals sit at 1 to 2% most of the year, with spikes clustering in January, March, early summer, and late November. Rakuten’s window closed on September 16 (it dropped to 3%); TopCashback’s 6% is still open. If your dates are firm, book inside the window.

Credit card strategy
Vrbo has historically coded as “real estate agents and managers, rentals,” not travel, so generic travel multipliers miss it. The Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, and Venture X all earn base points on a direct Vrbo booking.
The exception arrived in June 2026: the Chase Sapphire Preferred added a 3x category for vacation rentals that explicitly names Vrbo. That makes the Preferred the right card for Vrbo even if you also carry the Reserve.
The card travel portals (Chase Travel vacation rentals at 5x, Capital One Travel at 5x for Venture X) are tempting on paper, but inventory is thin, prices have tested higher than direct, and booking through them forfeits Rakuten.
Amex Offers on Vrbo appear occasionally. The last one, targeted, was $70 back on any US booking through December 2025, and it required booking via a special Amex link that barred portals and extensions. If one shows up again, do the math: at 6% on a $1,700 subtotal, TopCashback is worth $102, so a $70 offer that kills the portal is a loss on larger bookings.
Promo codes and host discounts
Vrbo says it does not offer traditional coupons, and that is accurate. The discounts are set by hosts and applied in the listed price:
- Early bird (60 or more days out) and last minute (roughly 14 to 30 days out)
- Weekly and monthly length-of-stay discounts, which average about 10% and 19% respectively
- Member-only rates (10% minimum) for signed-in travelers
- Mobile-only rates, visible in the app
- New listing discounts (20% for the first three guests)
The trick is that these all stack with each other and with portal cashback, because they are price reductions rather than codes. Sign in before searching so member pricing shows, check the app for a mobile-only rate, then book on desktop through the portal.
One Key
Expedia Group’s One Key program still pays OneKeyCash on Vrbo, but only for Silver members and above: Silver earns 1%, Gold and Platinum 2%, on the booking amount excluding taxes and fees. Blue (the entry tier) earns nothing on Vrbo. The July 2026 program changes that cut Expedia earning and ended flight earning did not touch the Vrbo rates. OneKeyCash redeems only on Pay Now listings and expires after 18 months of inactivity.

Common exclusions and fine print
- Cashback is calculated on the rental subtotal; the service fee, taxes, and refundable damage deposits are excluded.
- A cancelled booking earns nothing, and Vrbo refunds its service fee only inside the listing’s full-refund window. Pick a 100% refundable listing if plans are soft.
- Book on desktop in a clean session. App bookings and carts carried across sessions break tracking.
- Refer-a-friend codes (starting with “RAF”) void Rakuten cashback.
- Bookings under $20 are excluded, which will never matter.
Worked example
$2,000 week: $1,700 rental, $150 service fee, $150 taxes
Checkout sequence
- Sign in to Vrbo so member-only pricing shows. Check the app for any mobile-only rate on the listing you want.
- Confirm the cancellation policy. If your dates could move, choose a listing with a full-refund window.
- Open a clean browser session on desktop, activate TopCashback (6% today; use Rakuten only if it is higher on the day), and click through to vrbo.com.
- Book the listing. Leave any coupon field empty; there are no valid Vrbo codes.
- Pay with the Chase Sapphire Preferred for 3x. If you do not have it, use whichever card has an active Vrbo offer, otherwise your best flat-rate card.
- Confirm the click shows in the portal within 48 hours. The cashback posts about a month after checkout.
