The best time to buy luggage in 2026: Away, Rimowa, TUMI, and Monos, by month

TL;DR

Three of the four brands discount on a predictable calendar. Away and Monos go deepest at Black Friday (25% and 25-40%), TUMI runs a spring semi-annual sale and a fall select-styles sale of 30-40%, and Rimowa has never held a sale. If you can wait for late November, wait.

The stacking layers are thin in this category. Rakuten pays 2% at Away and TUMI and nothing at Monos or Rimowa. The only live card offer is TUMI's Amex Platinum Offer ($50 back on $250, through September 30, 2026). Away's recurring Chase Offer shows up in May.

Resellers open a second window. Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale (July) has carried TUMI and Monos at 20-25% off. But the TUMI Amex Offer requires buying direct, so a reseller sale and the card credit never combine; compare the two paths, don't add them.

Why this page exists

Stackable started with a suitcase. Before a trip in 2025 I went looking for one page that would tell me when to buy a carry-on, from which brand, and what discount to expect. What came back was a wall of coupon sites promising 40% off TUMI with codes from 2020, a “Rimowa Black Friday sale” that has never happened, and blog posts that listed portal rates from two years earlier as if they were current. None of them said what I actually needed to know: which of these brands ever discount, when, by how much, and what to do if the trip is next week.

This is that page. It is built from the four retailer guides on this site (Away, Rimowa, TUMI, and Monos), each verified on September 15, 2026, and it will be corrected as those pages are.

The short version

Brand Ever discounts? Deepest window Portal Card layer
Away Yes Black Friday, 25% sitewide (2025) Rakuten 2% Chase Offer in May ($100-$200 back)
Monos Yes, most often Black Friday, 25-40% None None found
TUMI Select styles only Fall sale, up to 40% (live now); Black Friday, up to 30% Rakuten 2%, TopCashback 1% Amex Platinum Offer, $50 on $250, through September 30
Rimowa Never None; Re-Crafted pre-owned at 35-48% off None (dropped from Rakuten in 2026) Last Amex Offer was 2020

The calendar, month by month

Dates are from each brand’s 2025 and 2026 sales, taken from the retailer pages. Where a window hasn’t been confirmed for 2026, it says so.

January. Post-holiday quiet. Monos usually holds something at 15% off between windows; Away runs bundle pricing ($100 off two or three suitcases) year-round. Nothing worth waiting for.

February. Monos: up to 25% ahead of spring break in February 2024, tied to Presidents’ Day. Away had no confirmed February window.

March. Monos again, up to 20% in early March 2026. Away’s March windows weren’t confirmed for 2026. Rimowa Re-Crafted launched in the US in March 2025; drops are unannounced.

April. TUMI’s spring semi-annual sale opened April 30 in 2026 (in stores, with a matching category on tumi.com), up to 30% off select styles. TUMI’s spring collection launches around the same time, which is what pushes outgoing colorways into the sale.

May. The best month for Away outside Black Friday. A Chase Offer of $100 back on $400 (Sapphire Preferred) or $200 back on $500 (Sapphire Reserve) ran in May 2025 and May 2026. It’s a statement credit, so it stacks with the $40 referral and Rakuten’s 2% on a full-price order. TUMI’s semi-annual sale runs through May 30. Memorial Day at Away and Monos was not confirmed for 2026.

June. Quiet. TUMI’s sale closes at the end of May, and the next Amex Offer batch is the thing to watch (TUMI’s have rolled over roughly quarterly since late 2024).

July. The reseller window. Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale ran July 18 to August 9 in 2026 (early access by tier July 14 to 16), and it has carried TUMI and Monos: the Monos Carry-On was $190 from $255 in July 2024. Away’s summer promotion (10% on select gear) opened July 31 in 2026. TUMI’s Amex Offer for the current cycle was added to the Platinum-only batch on July 2.

August. Away’s Labor Day sale opened August 22 in 2026 (up to 20% on select products, through September 3), and its suitcase-plus-bag bundle ($50 off) started August 19. Monos ran a Labor Day code (LONGWEEKEND, 10% on top of marked-down best-sellers, up to 25% total) through September 2 in 2024.

September. TUMI’s fall select-styles sale is live now: up to 40% off 19 Degree, Voyageur, and Alpha Bravo, the deepest cut we’ve seen on tumi.com, and it overlaps the Amex Platinum Offer through September 30. Monos is at 15% off best-sellers. Away’s Labor Day sale ended September 3; its 10% summer promotion runs to September 30.

October. Historically a TUMI Amex Offer month (the October 2024 offer was $50 on $250, and a $60-on-$300 offer expired October 17, 2025). Otherwise the pre-Black Friday lull.

November. The month. Away: 25% sitewide in 2025, and the referral doesn’t apply to sale items, so it’s the sale or the referral, not both. Monos: 25% sitewide in 2025 with the code auto-applied, opening the week before Thanksgiving; 30% rising to 40% on select pieces in 2024. TUMI: up to 30% off select styles, November 13 to December 1 in 2025. Also the month TUMI’s “Shops at Chase” offer appeared in 2025 ($250 back on $500 for Sapphire Reserve, posted November 5).

December. The tail of Black Friday pricing (Monos ran to December 5 in 2024, TUMI to December 1 in 2025). TUMI’s $80-on-$400 Amex Offer expired December 31, 2025. Rimowa’s last reseller markdown was a Nordstrom spend-tier promo ($300 off $1,200) in December 2020; nothing since.

The takeaway: if your trip is more than eight weeks out and the date is after Labor Day, wait for the week before Thanksgiving. That single decision is worth more than every portal and card layer in this category combined. Rimowa is the exception: there is no window, so buy it when you need it.

The layers, brand by brand

Luggage is a thin stacking category. The portal rates are low, the card offers are concentrated at one brand, and the codes are mostly fake. Here is what actually applies.

Away. Rakuten 2%, read from Rakuten’s awaytravel.com store page (down from 8% in May; TopCashback dropped the store). A $40 referral on a first order of $125 or more, full-price items only. The May Chase Offer. Away Reclaimed, its second-quality store, at roughly 20-30% off any time, with no LifetimeCare warranty and a 7-day return window.

TUMI. Rakuten 2%, TopCashback 1%, Capital One Shopping 0.5%. The Amex Platinum Offer ($50 on $250, through September 30, 2026) is a statement credit, so it stacks with the sale price and with Rakuten. The Chase “Shops at Chase” offer, when it exists, routes through Chase’s own link and replaces Rakuten; it’s a fork, not a layer, and at $250 on $500 it wins whenever it’s live.

Monos. Nothing on Rakuten, TopCashback, or Capital One Shopping, and no Amex or Chase Offer found for 2025 or 2026. The savings are all on monos.com: $100 off any two Classic or Expandable pieces (automatic), a $20 referral on a first order of $200 or more (a code, so assume it replaces a sale code), and the sale calendar above.

Rimowa. Nothing. Rakuten’s rimowa.com page now says the store is no longer available (it paid 2% as recently as May 2026). The last targeted Amex Offer was 2020. Re-Crafted is the only lever: inspected pre-owned aluminum at roughly $600 to $1,000 against $1,400 and up new, a two-year warranty, and a $300 trade-in voucher for your old Rimowa. Inventory is drop-based and sells out.

The reseller windows, and the caveat

Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman all carry some of these brands, and department-store sales sometimes touch luggage.

The most reliable one is Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale in July. It has included TUMI and Monos at roughly 20-25% off, and Nordstrom pays 2.4% on TopCashback (Rakuten dropped Nordstrom in 2026, so the Monos page’s older note about Nordstrom being on Rakuten no longer holds). The selection is narrow, and it’s one window a year. Nordstrom’s full calendar is here.

Rimowa at department stores is a different story. LVMH has been pulling Rimowa from department stores to prevent discounting; Neiman and Bergdorf carry it, and if a Bergdorf gift-card event or portal spike doesn’t exclude Rimowa, that’s a real stack. Check the exclusions, because luggage is often carved out. Nordstrom’s last documented Rimowa markdown was December 2020.

The caveat that matters: card offers that require buying direct don’t travel to a reseller. TUMI’s Amex Offer terms say the purchase must be with TUMI (tumi.com or a US TUMI store), not a reseller. So a Nordstrom TUMI purchase gets Nordstrom’s portal rate and Nordstrom’s sale price, and nothing from the TUMI offer. Write it out as two paths:

TUMI Navigation Backpack, $550 list Path A: tumi.com, September 2026 Path B: Nordstrom Anniversary (typical 25%)
Sale price $385 (30% off, select styles) $413
Card offer $50 Amex Platinum credit Not eligible
Portal Rakuten 2% on $385, $7.70 TopCashback 2.4% on $413, $9.90
Net ~$327 ~$403

Path A wins today because the fall sale is unusually deep. In a month with no tumi.com sale, Path B’s 25% beats the $50 credit plus 2% by about $75. The point isn’t which path always wins; it’s that you compare them rather than assume they add.

Decision table by trip date

Your trip is in… Away Monos TUMI Rimowa
Under 3 weeks Buy now. Referral ($40 on $125+) plus Rakuten 2% on full price, or check Reclaimed. Buy now at the 15% sale; build a set for the automatic $100 off. Buy now. Sale price plus Amex Offer plus Rakuten, before September 30. Check Re-Crafted, then buy direct.
3 to 8 weeks Same as above; the next window is Black Friday and you’ll miss it. Same. Same; the Amex Offer likely renews in October but the 40% sale may not. Same.
8 weeks or more, before Thanksgiving Wait for Black Friday (25% in 2025). Wait for Black Friday (25-40%). Wait for Black Friday (up to 30%) unless your piece is in the fall sale now. No reason to wait. Buy when you need it.
Spring trip (March to May) Watch for the May Chase Offer; buy full price with the referral and Rakuten when it lands. Presidents’ Day or early March windows, 20-25%. Spring semi-annual sale, late April to May, up to 30%. Same.
Summer trip (June to August) Labor Day sale in late August if the timing works; otherwise full price with the referral. Nordstrom Anniversary in July, or wait for Labor Day. Nordstrom Anniversary in July (no Amex Offer) or the next Amex Offer cycle direct. Same.

The honest downsides

Rakuten’s 2% at Away and TUMI is a rounding error on a $400 bag. It’s worth activating because it’s free, and because the $50 welcome bonus on a first purchase over $50 is worth more than the rate itself, but don’t let it drive the decision. Tracking fails on a meaningful share of orders when an ad blocker or an earlier affiliate cookie is in play, and disputes take weeks. Amex Offer credits post in 30 days or so and get clawed back on returns. Away’s referral and its sale don’t combine; Monos’ referral and its sale codes almost certainly don’t either. And every “40% off TUMI” code you see outside a named sale window is expired or was never real.

What holds up is the calendar. Away, Monos, and TUMI discount on schedule, and Rimowa doesn’t. If this page had existed the day I went looking, I would have bought in November and saved about a hundred dollars.

Before you buy the bag, open Rakuten

Away and TUMI both pay 2% through Rakuten on top of their sales, and a first Away or TUMI order clears the $50 welcome bonus by itself.

FAQ

What is the single best month to buy luggage?
November. Away ran 25% sitewide at Black Friday 2025, Monos ran 25% sitewide (and up to 40% in 2023 and 2024), and TUMI ran up to 30% off select styles from November 13 to December 1. Nothing else on the calendar beats all three at once. Rimowa is the exception; it's the same price in November as in March.
Does Rimowa ever go on sale?
No. Rimowa has never run a Black Friday or seasonal promotion, there's no sale section on rimowa.com, and as of September 2026 it isn't on Rakuten either. The only structural discount is Re-Crafted, its pre-owned aluminum program, at roughly 35-48% below new with a two-year warranty. The last documented reseller markdown was a Nordstrom spend-tier promo in December 2020.
Can I use Rakuten and an Amex Offer on the same luggage order?
At TUMI, yes. The Amex Offer is a statement credit and Rakuten tracks the click, so both pay on a tumi.com order. At Away, Rakuten's 2% stacks with the May Chase Offer the same way. Monos and Rimowa have no portal listing, so there's nothing to stack.
Is it cheaper to buy TUMI at Nordstrom during the Anniversary Sale?
Sometimes on the price tag, rarely on the total. Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale (July 18 to August 9 in 2026) has included TUMI, and Nordstrom pays 2.4% on TopCashback. But the TUMI Amex Offer only applies to purchases made directly with TUMI, so you give it up at Nordstrom. Run the math both ways before deciding.
My trip is in three weeks. What should I do?
Buy now, and take whatever layers are live. Today that means the TUMI select-styles sale plus the Amex Offer plus Rakuten, the Monos 15% sale, or an Away referral plus Rakuten on a full-price bag. Away Reclaimed and Rimowa Re-Crafted are worth a look if you don't need a specific color.
Do travel cards earn bonus points on luggage?
We couldn't verify it for any of the four brands, and luggage retailers normally code as general retail. Assume your card's base rate and pick the card with purchase protection or extended warranty instead.
Are the coupon codes on aggregator sites real?
Mostly not. TUMI's listed 20-50% codes are recycled outlet and old regional promos, Rimowa has never issued codes, and Away's and Monos' sale codes auto-apply during the window. An unlisted code can void Rakuten tracking at Away and TUMI, so don't type one in.
