Hertz is the rental company where the credit card, not the cashback portal, carries the value. The Amex Platinum gives President's Circle status plus a CDP code worth up to 20% off base rates, a $75 Amex Offer is live through September 30, 2026, and the Sapphire Reserve gives primary collision coverage. The portals pay 2.5% (Rakuten) to 5% (TopCashback) and only on Pay Now bookings. The question on every Hertz booking is whether to take the CDP discount or the portal, and the CDP usually wins.

The 30-second answer

The best current Hertz stack

Rates read from Rakuten's and TopCashback's store pages for hertz.com. The Amex Offer runs through September 30, 2026.

  • Amex Offer (Platinum)
$75 back on $350+ at corporate-owned US locations, rental paid by September 30, 2026; statement credit, stacks with sales and CDPs
    $75
  • Amex Platinum CDP 211762
Up to 20% off published base rates, plus President's Circle status and a guaranteed one-class upgrade
    up to 20%
  • TopCashback / Rakuten
Pay Now only, base rate only; Rakuten's terms list CDP discounts as excluded
    5% / 2.5%
  • Sapphire Reserve coverage
Primary collision and theft up to $75,000; skip the $12-25 per day counter waiver
    $12-25/day
$600 prepaid week with the Amex CDP and Amex Offer
~$405 (32% off)
The fork: Path A is CDP plus Amex Offer, portal optional. Path B is Pay Now plus portal plus Amex Offer, no CDP. Path A wins unless a Pay Now sale or a portal spike beats the CDP rate on your dates. Hertz has not gone above 5% on Rakuten in the window we could verify, so it is usually the sale, not the portal, that flips it.

Retailer overview

Hertz is the largest of the legacy US rental brands, with Dollar and Thrifty underneath it and a corporate-owned airport network that matters for every card benefit on this page. Its premium tier is the Dream Collection: Porsche 911, Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera, Range Rover Sport, and Mercedes G550 at around 30 major US airports, with a 25-and-over rule and an ID or proof-of-insurance check that President’s Circle members skip.

Hertz does not run coupon codes in the DTC sense. Discounts arrive through CDP (Customer Discount Program) codes tied to a card, a club, or an employer, through Pay Now prepaid rates, and through statement-credit offers from Amex, Chase, and Capital One Shopping. The savings picture is the inverse of Sixt: at Sixt the portal is the whole game, at Hertz the card is.

Cashback portal strategy

Portal Current rate Notes
TopCashback 5% Pay Now only, base rate excluding taxes and fees. Excludes counter upsells, corporate, government, and travel-industry rates. Missing-cashback claims accepted within 100 days.
Rakuten 2.5% Pay Now only, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand rentals. Terms exclude CDP discounts and Gold Plus member rates. Unlisted codes void cashback. Posts within a month after the rental ends.
Capital One Shopping 2% Same exclusions as TopCashback. Targeted email bonuses ($125 back on $275, $90 on $150) have appeared in 2025 and 2026.
RebatesMe / BeFrugal 5.1% / 3% Smaller portals with the same Pay Now rule.

Rakuten’s store page titles have shown 4% and 5% during July and August 2026, so 2.5% is a low point rather than a floor. Either way, Hertz portal rates sit in the low single digits while the CDP discounts run to 20%. That is the whole reason this page is a fork rather than a stack.

The CDP-versus-portal problem. A CDP is not a coupon. It is a negotiated rate plan entered in the reservation’s discount-code field, and Hertz can ask for proof of eligibility at the counter. Because it is not a coupon code, it does not trigger the “codes not listed on the portal void cashback” clause, and in practice a Pay Now booking with a CDP generally tracks. But Rakuten’s Hertz terms specifically list “CDP discounts, Hertz Member Program discounts/rates” as ineligible, so Rakuten has grounds to deny the payout. TopCashback’s and Capital One Shopping’s terms only exclude “corporate negotiated rate bookings,” which is narrower. If you want to try to earn both, use TopCashback, book Pay Now, and treat the cashback as found money rather than part of the math.

Credit card / Amex Offer strategy

This is where Hertz pays out.

Amex Offer (live). $75 back on $350 or more at Hertz, Platinum cardholders (not the Schwab or Morgan Stanley variants), rental paid by September 30, 2026. Corporate-owned US locations only, booked on hertz.com, the app, by phone, or at the counter. Excludes licensee locations, e-Toll, Hertz Car Sales, Rent2Buy, and bookings through travel agents or affiliate booking sites, which reads as OTAs (a Rakuten click lands you on hertz.com). Spend accumulates across rentals. The cadence: $70 on $350 through September 3, 2024; $100 on $500 through October 31, 2025; $75 on $350 through September 30, 2026. Expect a renewal around late summer 2027.

Chase Offer. 10% back, max $50, on $500 at hertz.com, expired February 25, 2025. It required CDP 2283893. Nothing newer surfaced in our 2026 searches.

Capital One Shopping. Targeted email bonuses: $125 back on a $275+ Pay Now rental (February 2026), $90 on $150 earlier, and a 30% back offer in 2025. Limit one per user, redeemable in gift cards only.

The Amex Platinum CDP. Enrolling the Car Rental Privileges benefit gives President’s Circle and access to CDP 211762: up to 20% off published base rates when you pay with the Platinum, a four-hour return grace period in the US, and a one-class upgrade on 24-hour advance reservations. Hertz is requiring existing Amex enrollees to re-enroll by December 31, 2026; the process is Benefits, Car Rental Privileges, Enroll Now, and it takes up to 72 hours.

Insurance trade-off: the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred both carry primary collision and theft coverage (Reserve up to $75,000, rentals of 31 days or less, decline the counter waiver and charge the whole rental to the card). Amex coverage is secondary unless you pay for Premium Car Rental Protection. On a Dream Collection car, paying with the Reserve and forgoing the $75 Amex Offer is the sane choice. On a Corolla, take the $75.

Category earning: car rentals code as travel, so 3x on the Sapphire Reserve, 2x on the Preferred, and 2x on the Venture X. The Platinum’s 5x is airfare and prepaid hotels only, so Hertz earns 1x on it. The Amex Offer is worth more than the points gap on any rental under about $1,500.

Gold Plus Rewards and status

Gold Plus Rewards is free. Base members earn 1 point per dollar, skip the counter at Gold locations, and get a free additional driver at most US locations (spouse or partner). Five Star (3 rentals or $1,000 a year) earns 1.25x and adds Ultimate Choice, where you pick your own car from the lot on a midsize or larger booking. President’s Circle (15 rentals or $3,000) earns 1.5x, adds a guaranteed one-class upgrade, the widest lot, and a dedicated phone line. Points expire after 12 months without activity. A one-day US rental starts at 950 points; a two-week Prestige Collection rental tops out near 31,667.

Status without renting: Amex Platinum, Business Platinum, Delta Reserve, and Capital One Venture X give President’s Circle. Amex Gold, Capital One Venture, and any Visa Infinite card including the Sapphire Reserve give Five Star. Hertz also runs a public status match from Avis, National, Enterprise, and Sixt tiers.

Discount programs

AAA CDP. Up to 20% off base rates, young-renter fee waived for ages 20 to 24, one free child seat, free additional drivers who are also AAA members, and a free rental day after the first Gold rental. AAA also runs its own Hertz promotions (up to 35% off Pay Later base rates in September 2025 with promo code 211840 alongside the AAA CDP), and those cannot be combined with other discounts.

One CDP per reservation. Amex 211762 and the AAA CDP compete for the same field. Both are “up to 20%,” so price the same car both ways.

Costco Travel. Does not sell Hertz. Its partners are Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise.

Military, government, AARP. Hertz maintains CDPs for each. Government and travel-industry rates are excluded by every portal.

Not found: a referral program, a price-match policy, an email-signup code.

Best time of year to buy

Hertz’s own sales are Pay Now discounts on base rates, usually “up to 25%” as a standing offer and 30-40% around Cyber Monday and spring. Dream Collection, minivans, and large SUVs are excluded from nearly all of them.

Cyber Monday
Late November through early December. 25% off at airport locations, book by December 3, 2024; earlier years ran 30-40% off base rates on Pay Now.
25-40%
Spring flash sale
Up to 35% off Pay Now base rates, booked by April 23, 2025 for April 22 to May 30 pickups. Stacked with that year's Amex Offer.
Up to 35%
Amex Offer cycle
Late summer each year: September 2024, October 2025, September 2026 expiries. $70 to $100 back.
$75-$100
Standing Pay Now rate
Up to 25% off base rates any time you prepay. Cancellation costs $50-$100, or $200 inside 24 hours.
Up to 25%

The practical sequence for a trip months out: hold a Pay Later reservation with the CDP as insurance, watch for a sale or portal spike, and rebook as Pay Now inside that window if the discount plus cashback beats the CDP rate. If it does not, keep the Pay Later booking.

Common exclusions and fine print

  • Every portal pays on Pay Now only, on the base rate only, and never on counter upsells, tolls, or fuel
  • Rakuten excludes CDP and Gold Plus member rates; TopCashback and Capital One Shopping exclude corporate negotiated, government, and travel-industry rates
  • Amex Offer: corporate-owned US locations only, paid by September 30, 2026, not via OTAs or travel agents
  • Amex CDP 211762 requires paying with the enrolled Amex card; Hertz may ask for the card and ID at pickup
  • One CDP per reservation; Hertz sale promotions “may not be used with other discounts”
  • Pay Now cancellations: $50-$100 with 24+ hours’ notice, $200 inside 24 hours, no refund for unused days, two changes allowed
  • Dream Collection: 25 and older, excluded from most sales, and Chase coverage caps at $75,000 in damage

Checkout sequence

  1. Enroll (or re-enroll) the Amex Platinum Car Rental Privileges benefit with your Gold Plus number. Allow 72 hours.
  2. Check every Amex account for the Hertz offer and add it to the Platinum you will pay with.
  3. Price the car three ways on hertz.com: CDP 211762 Pay Later, AAA CDP Pay Later (if a member), and no-CDP Pay Now with the sale rate. Note the base rate for each.
  4. Path A (CDP wins, the usual case): book with the CDP, Pay Later or Pay Now, and pay with the Platinum. Optionally click through TopCashback first on a Pay Now booking and treat any cashback as a bonus.
  5. Path B (portal spike or sale wins): clean browser, activate TopCashback or Rakuten, click through, book Pay Now with no CDP, pay with the Platinum for the $75 or the Sapphire Reserve for primary coverage.
  6. Decline the counter collision waiver if you paid with a Sapphire card. Confirm the Amex credit posts within a few days and any portal cashback within a month after the rental ends.
Worked example

One-week midsize rental, $600 published base rate, corporate-owned airport location

Path A: Amex CDP 211762 at 20% off base$120.00 off
Amex Platinum Offer ($350+ spend)$75.00
TopCashback 5% on $480 Pay Now (if it tracks)$24.00
You pay (before taxes and fees)~$405 (32% off), $381 if cashback tracks

Path B, no CDP: $600 base with the standing "up to 25%" Pay Now rate lands around $450, minus $75 Amex and $22.50 TopCashback, about $352. That beats Path A only if the Pay Now sale actually delivers the full 25% on your dates and car class, and it costs you cancellation flexibility. Price both; the CDP rate is the benchmark.

FAQ

Does a CDP code void portal cashback?
Usually not in practice, but read the fine print. A CDP goes in the discount-code field on the reservation, not a coupon-code field, so it does not trip the "unlisted codes void cashback" rule. Rakuten's Hertz terms do list "CDP discounts" and member rates as excluded, while TopCashback and Capital One Shopping only exclude corporate negotiated and government bookings. Treat cashback on a CDP booking as a bonus you cannot claim if it fails, and use TopCashback rather than Rakuten if you try it.
Does the Amex Offer combine with the Amex CDP discount?
Yes. The offer is a statement credit triggered by $350 of Hertz spend on the enrolled card. The CDP is a rate plan. Slickdeals threads on the 2025 Hertz flash sale confirmed the same offer stacking with a discounted base rate. The rental has to be at a corporate-owned US location and paid by September 30, 2026.
Which cards give Hertz status?
Amex Platinum, Business Platinum, Delta Reserve, and Capital One Venture X give President's Circle. Amex Gold, Capital One Venture, and any Visa Infinite card (Chase Sapphire Reserve included) give Five Star. Amex Platinum holders must re-enroll by December 31, 2026 or Hertz may remove the status and the CDP from their Gold Plus profile.
Pay Now or Pay Later?
Pay Now is up to 25% cheaper on the base rate and is the only way any portal pays. Cancelling it costs $50 to $100 with more than 24 hours' notice and $200 inside 24 hours. Pay Later is free to cancel. Since the Amex CDP works on both, the flexible play is Pay Later with the CDP, then rebook as Pay Now only if a portal spike or sale makes the math clearly better.
Does the Sapphire Reserve cover a Dream Collection Porsche?
The published exclusions are antique cars, motorcycles, RVs, trucks, limos, large vans, and peer-to-peer rentals, with a $75,000 damage cap. A 911 or Cayenne is not named as excluded, but Hertz requires renters to be 25 or older and to show proof of insurance or a passport for Dream cars unless they hold President's Circle. We could not verify a Dream Collection claim outcome, so call Chase's benefit administrator before relying on it for a six-figure car.
Does AAA beat the Amex CDP?
Both are up to 20% off base rates. AAA adds a waived young-renter fee for ages 20 to 24, a free child seat, and free additional drivers who are also AAA members. Amex adds President's Circle and a four-hour return grace period. You can only enter one CDP per reservation, so price both.
Can I book Hertz through Costco Travel?
No. Costco Travel's rental partners are Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise. The Hertz equivalents of the Costco perks (free additional driver, no prepayment) come from Gold Plus Rewards and the AAA CDP instead.
