The best way to book ITA Airways in 2026

Airline overview

ITA Airways took over from Alitalia in 2021 and is now majority owned by Lufthansa Group. On April 1, 2026 it left SkyTeam, joined Star Alliance as its 26th member, and folded its Volare loyalty program into Lufthansa’s Miles & More. It flies from Rome Fiumicino (with a secondary base at Milan Linate for short-haul) to about eight US gateways, including three daily JFK flights and a Houston route that launched in May 2026. The business-class product is a modern 1-2-1 lie-flat cabin on the A350 and A330neo.

For a stacker, ITA is the rare premium airline where the cash side is strong and the points side is weak.

Cashback portal strategy

Compared with 1 to 2% at Qatar, Virgin, and Turkish, ITA’s portal layer is real money: roughly $100 to $173 on a $2,500 base fare.

Credit card / Amex Offer strategy

Airfare booked direct earns Amex Platinum 5x, Chase Sapphire Reserve 4x, and Capital One Venture X 2x.

The Amex Offer is the standout. ITA offers have run in a steady cycle: $175 back on $1,000 (through November 2024), then $225 back on $1,250 (through May 2025, again through September 2025, and again through July 31, 2026). The terms require US-originating flights in USD, booked on ita-airways.com or the app, not by phone and not through a reseller. Check every Amex account you hold before booking; the offer is targeted, and it usually reappears within a few months of expiring.

The Platinum’s $200 airline incidental credit does not apply to ITA.

Points or cash?

Volare ended on March 30, 2026 and balances were not migrated, so anyone holding Volare points had to burn them. Miles & More status was matched for former Volare elites through February 2027.

The problem for Americans is that Miles & More has no major US bank transfer partner. The workaround is booking ITA as a Star Alliance partner through Aeroplan (transfers from Amex, Chase, Capital One, Bilt) or Avianca LifeMiles (Amex, Citi, Capital One, Bilt, Wells Fargo). In practice, 2026 searches on both programs found economy-only award space on ITA’s transatlantic flights. Until business-class space opens up, the cash stack wins.

Promo codes and sale windows

ITA’s pattern is a winter flash sale: 20% off the base fare with a code (LOVE, book by February 16, 2026) for spring travel, excluding basic economy and multi-city. Codes entered on the US site should track with the portal, but an unlisted code can void cashback, so compare: 20% off base fare beats 7% back, so take the code when it is live and accept the portal risk.

Common exclusions and fine print

• Cashback only on the US site in USD; fees and taxes are excluded; cancellations forfeit it.
• The Amex Offer excludes phone bookings, OTAs, and non-US-origin itineraries.
• Rome connections between the domestic and international terminals take time; Milan Linate is short-haul only, so long-haul flights route through Rome.
• Older A330-200 aircraft are being retired through 2026; check the aircraft type if the newer cabin matters to you.
