Retailer overview
StubHub is the largest US ticket resale marketplace and has been a public company since its NYSE listing in September 2025. It sells other people’s tickets, which shapes the whole stack: there is no manufacturer discount to hunt, prices are set by supply and demand, and the site is now required to show the all-in price up front after a $10 million FTC settlement in April 2026.
What makes StubHub worth a page on a premium site is the size of the layers. Portal rates move from a 2% base to 25% flash days, the Chase Sapphire Reserve pays $300 a year toward StubHub, and resale prices for concerts fall roughly a third by event day.
Cashback portal strategy
| Portal | Current rate | Base | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TopCashback | 10% | 2-4% | Has run 15% and a 25% one-day event. Calculated on ticket price only; requires starting with an empty cart. |
| Rakuten | 2% | 2% | Dropped from 10% on September 16, 2026. 12% (July 15, 2026) and 17% (Feb 4, 2026) on Rakuten’s own big-deal days. Pays about a week after the event. |
| Capital One Shopping | 2% | Ticket price only. | |
| BeFrugal | 10% | 15% during promotions. |
Two things to internalize. First, cashback is calculated on the ticket price and excludes fees; the all-in price you see is not the base. Second, payout is tied to the event date, so the cash arrives after the show.

Credit card strategy
Chase Sapphire Reserve. The card carries a $300 annual StubHub or viagogo credit, split into $150 for January to June and $150 for July to December, through December 31, 2027. Activation is required in the Chase app before purchase, and unlike the portals, the credit counts fees and taxes. For a Reserve holder this is the biggest single layer on any StubHub order under $150 per half.
Chase Freedom Flex. The Q3 2026 bonus category (July 1 to September 30) is 5% on select live entertainment, capped at $1,500 in spend; StubHub is not named in Chase’s list but has been reported to earn. Activate the quarter before buying.
Amex, Chase, and bank offers. These recur but are small: Amex ran 3% back up to $16 (expired March 2026), Chase 5% up to $24.99 (expired June 2026), US Bank 10% up to $20 (expired June 2026), and Bank of America has 4% back up to $25 expiring in mid-September 2026. Check the card you plan to use; do not plan the purchase around them.
Capital One Savor. Whether StubHub codes as entertainment is unverified.
Promo code opportunities
None. StubHub discontinued its public code program in 2016. Everything on coupon aggregators is expired, fabricated, or a referral to a different site. There is no referral program and no first-order discount. Using an unlisted code can void portal cashback on both Rakuten and TopCashback, so leave the promo field empty.
Best time to buy
StubHub’s own data says prices peak right after the on-sale and are best weeks or months later, often dropping close to the event; a third of buyers purchase within 48 hours. Independent analysis of resale data puts concert tickets about 33% below their average on event day and 27% below the day before, with festivals bottoming out about 13 days out. Sports and theater patterns are less documented.
The compounding play: a mid-demand show, bought in the final week, on a portal flash day, with the Reserve credit active.
Common exclusions and fine print
- Cashback excludes fees, taxes, delivery, gift cards, and broker orders.
- Refunded or cancelled orders void the cashback. Reselling tickets you bought does too.
- Buy on the website in a clean browser session, not the app. TopCashback requires an empty cart at click-through.
- Mobile-transfer tickets can arrive close to event time; the FanProtect Guarantee promises valid tickets in time or comparable replacements or a refund.
- The Sapphire Reserve credit must be activated before purchase and only applies to the card it is activated on.
Worked example
$400 order: $340 in tickets, $60 in fees
On a 25% flash day the portal line becomes $85, and the same order nets out near $145.
Checkout sequence
- Check for a cardmember presale first. Face value beats any resale stack.
- If you hold the Sapphire Reserve, activate the StubHub credit in the Chase app. If you hold the Freedom Flex, activate Q3.
- Decide whether to wait. Weeks out and mid-demand: watch prices and portal rates. Days out or must-see: buy.
- Open a clean browser session, activate TopCashback (or Rakuten if it has spiked higher), and click through to stubhub.com on the web.
- Pick seats, leave the promo field empty, and pay with the Reserve (for the credit) or the Flex (for 5%).
- Confirm the click shows in the portal within 48 hours. Expect the cashback about a week after the event.

Rakuten and TopCashback have run StubHub at 12%, 17%, and 25% in 2026 alone, usually for a day, and Rakuten's 10% run ended in mid-September. We email the morning it happens.

Activate the Reserve credit, activate TopCashback (10% today; Rakuten is at 2%), and buy on the web in a clean session. Wait for a spike if the show is still weeks away.
