Retailer overview
Ulta Beauty is the largest specialty beauty retailer in the US, and the only one that sells Estée Lauder and Maybelline in the same aisle. That mix is why it discounts differently from Sephora, which holds price and concentrates its discount into two tiered Savings Events. Ulta runs sales almost continuously: three-week events with a new set of 50%-off products every day, a coupon most weeks, points multipliers by tier, and a Black Friday that goes to 50% on select brands.
What makes Ulta interesting for stacking is the portal. Rakuten has spiked ulta.com to 12% and 20% in the last year, which Sephora never does, and TopCashback’s 4% base is double Sephora’s. What makes it annoying is the coupon: it excludes most prestige brands, and it’s a code, which can void the portal.

Cashback portal strategy
| Portal | Current rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TopCashback | 4% | Best base rate. Excludes gift cards, mystery bags, samplers, gifts with purchase, Dyson, Dior, and in-store pickup orders. Codes not shown on TopCashback disqualify cashback. |
| Rakuten | 2% | 20% on November 1, 2025; 12% Black Friday week 2025. Excludes Dior, gift cards, and the portion paid with Rewards. Unlisted codes may void cashback. |
| Capital One Shopping | 1% | Excludes Dior, gift cards, and certain promo codes. |
The 2025 pattern: Rakuten’s Holiday Big Deal Reveal put Ulta at 20% for November 1 only (one store per day for the first 10 days of November), then the store page ran 12% through Black Friday week. Rakuten listed Ulta at 15% on Cyber Monday 2022; we couldn’t verify the 2025 Cyber Monday rate. Outside November, every snapshot we found was 2%. The “Exclusive 15% Cash Back” tag on Rakuten’s page today sits on a handful of select products with no terms attached; it isn’t a sitewide rate.
The practical read: TopCashback at 4% wins on any day Rakuten is at 2%, which is most of the year. Rakuten wins by a mile in November. Neither pays on the portion you cover with points.

Credit card / Amex Offer strategy
Amex Offers. Two ran on ulta.com in fall 2025: “Earn 7% back on purchases, up to a total of $7” and a 5% version capped at $5, both online through October 31, 2025. Statement credits, so they stacked with the portal and the sale, but the caps made them worth one small order. Nothing is listed for Ulta on Amex as of mid-September 2026.
Chase Offers. “Earn 7% cash back on all of your Ulta Beauty purchases, until a $7.00 cash back maximum is reached,” July 17 to August 17, 2025. In-store only. Not live today.
Bank of America. Three online offers run through fall 2026: 5% to October 14, 2% to December 7, and 3% to December 15. They require the BofA “Shop Now” link and a single browser session, so they compete with the portal for the click rather than stacking. Citi ran a 2.5% in-store offer earlier in 2026, now expired.
Ulta Beauty Rewards Mastercard and store card (Comenity). 2 points per dollar at Ulta (1 base plus 1 extra), 1 point per $3 elsewhere, no annual fee, 3% foreign transaction fee. 20% off your first purchase on the card, plus 500 bonus points for $500 of non-Ulta spend in 90 days. It’s a payment method, so it doesn’t touch coupon or portal eligibility. Without it, a flat 2% card is the fallback; no premium card bonuses beauty.
No direct-only card credit exists at Ulta, so there’s no fork. Portal, sale, points, and card all stack.
Ultamate Rewards
- Tiers: Member (free), Platinum ($500 spend in a calendar year), Diamond ($1,200). Status resets on the calendar year.
- Earning: 1 point per dollar for Members, 1.25 Platinum, 1.5 Diamond. The Ulta card adds 1 more. 2x in your birthday month.
- Redeeming: 100 pts = $3, 250 = $8, 500 = $17.50, 750 = $30, 1,000 = $50, 2,000 = $125. The value per point doubles between the first and last rung, so save to 2,000.
- Stacking: points combine with coupons, sales, and any payment method. Points earned in a transaction can’t be redeemed in it.
- Expiration: Members’ points expire at the end of the quarter one year after they’re earned. Platinum and Diamond points don’t expire while you hold status.
- Diamond perks: free shipping on $25 orders every day; Platinum and Diamond get free shipping on Beauty Steals during events; Diamond exclusive weekly gifts with a $50 purchase during 21 Days.
- Multipliers: Platinum and Diamond Appreciation Days ran August 10 to 11, 2026 (10x on 250+ brands, 5x on nearly everything else, online only). Bonus-points offers also appear in the app and need activating.
- Referral: none found.
Coupons and codes
Ulta’s coupon is usually $3.50 off $15, sometimes 20% off or $10 off $50. One per transaction. The exclusion list covers most prestige brands, fragrance, Chanel, Dyson, Kylie Cosmetics, Philosophy, and salon services. A 20% coupon that includes prestige appears three or four times a year, usually around the holidays, spring, and late summer.
All of these are codes. On a $60 mass-brand basket, $3.50 beats TopCashback’s $2.40, so use the coupon and forget the portal. On a $200 prestige basket in a 12% Rakuten week, the coupon probably doesn’t apply anyway; leave it out and protect the $24.
Best time of year to buy
Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025. Hello Holidays ran November 9 to 11 (150-plus online offers, up to 40% off, up to $20 off prestige and fragrance with code GIFTS). The Black Friday sale opened online the evening of Tuesday, November 25 with Beauty Busters up to 50% off. Cyber Monday was a separate set of deals from 12 a.m. CT Sunday, November 30 through December 1, up to 40% off, with code CYBER taking $10 off $50 of prestige or fragrance. Rakuten paid 20% on November 1 and 12% during Black Friday week. The Amex 7% and 5% offers expired October 31, before the sale.
What to expect in 2026. Black Friday is November 27. Expect the sale online around November 24 or 25, running through Cyber Monday, November 30. If Rakuten repeats the reveal format, expect one 20% day in the first 10 days of November and an elevated rate for Black Friday week. The BofA 2% and 3% offers run into December but don’t combine with a portal click.
November is the best month: the only time the sale, the portal spike, and a prestige-inclusive coupon can land in the same three weeks. For one specific product, the best day is its Beauty Steal day.
Common exclusions and fine print
- Dior is excluded from cashback on every portal; TopCashback also excludes Dyson and in-store pickup orders
- Gift cards, mystery bags, samplers, and gifts with purchase earn no cashback
- The portion of an order paid with points earns no cashback
- Coupons not listed on the portal can void cashback; one coupon per transaction
- Prestige brands, fragrance, Chanel, Dyson, and Kylie are excluded from most coupons
- Points can’t be earned and redeemed in the same transaction; Member points expire after roughly 12 to 15 months
- Returns: 60 days, opened products accepted; refund to original payment through day 30, store credit from day 31 to 60; mail returns are at your cost and the shipping charge is not refunded
- No competitor price match and no formal price adjustment
Checkout sequence
- Check the Ulta store page on Rakuten and TopCashback. Above 4% on Rakuten, use Rakuten. Otherwise TopCashback.
- Check Amex, Chase, and BofA card-linked offers. Amex and Chase statement credits stack; a BofA "Shop Now" offer replaces the portal click, so take whichever pays more.
- Decide on the coupon. Prestige basket: skip it. Mass basket under about $90: the $3.50 coupon beats the portal, so use it and don't expect cashback.
- Clean browser session, ad blockers off. Sign in to Ultamate Rewards, activate the portal, click through to ulta.com.
- Build the cart at the sale or Beauty Steal price. Redeem points at checkout only if you've hit a good rung (1,000 or 2,000); remember the redeemed portion earns no cashback.
- Pay with the Ulta card for the extra point per dollar, or the Amex holding an offer. Confirm the portal shows the order pending within 48 hours.
$200 of prestige makeup, Black Friday week, Diamond member with the Ulta card
Same cart today: no sale, TopCashback 4% ($8), 300 points (~$9). About $183, or 9% off. Same cart on a 20% Rakuten day at full price: $200 minus $40 minus $9, about $151. The sale matters more than the spike, and both beat the coupon.
