Retailer overview
Harrods is the Knightsbridge department store, privately owned by Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund since 2010, and since November 2024 it has sold to Americans through a localized storefront powered by Global-e. That matters more than it sounds. Before Global-e, a US order was a UK order in pounds with a customs surprise on delivery. Now it’s dollars, VAT-free, and duties-paid at checkout.
The stack is small. The interesting question is whether the landed price beats what you’d pay at the brand’s US boutique or at Saks, and the answer depends on where the item was made.
Cashback portal strategy
| Portal | Current rate | Exclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Rakuten | 2% | Food, furniture, pre-owned Rolex, gift cards; UK-site or UK-shipped orders; unlisted codes |
| TopCashback | 2% | Gucci, Chanel beauty, Christian Louboutin beauty, furniture, certain food, pre-owned Rolex, gift cards; US site only |
| Mr. Rebates | 1% | For completeness |
Both lead portals sit at 2% and neither shows a “was” rate or a recent spike. Cashback is calculated on item price only, not on duties, shipping, or tax. Use whichever portal you already have a balance on; there’s no rate reason to prefer one.

Credit card strategy
No Harrods offer surfaced on US Amex or Chase in 2025 or 2026. The Harrods American Express card is UK-only and invitation-based.
The card decision here is about fees, not points. Harrods bills US orders in dollars, so a foreign transaction fee shouldn’t apply, but some issuers still code Global-e merchants as foreign. Use a card with no foreign transaction fee (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum or Gold, most Capital One cards) so the question never comes up. Purchase protection is a bonus at this price point.
Harrods Rewards
Harrods Rewards is free to join. Tiers by annual spend in pounds: Green (to £1,999), Bronze (£2,000), Gold (£5,000), Black (£10,000), Platinum (£50,000). Earn 1 point per £1 at Green and Bronze, 2 at Gold, 3 at Black and Platinum; 500 points = £5.
What Rewards does give a US shopper is access to the Rewards Exclusive events: 10% off sitewide (20% on select beauty), applied automatically at checkout for logged-in members, no code. The last one ran July 30 to August 2, 2026, and one typically overlaps the January sale. Exclusions: fine jewelry, watches, Food Halls, hampers, furniture, gift cards, and select brands. Because there’s no code, the portal still pays during these events. That’s the best stack Harrods offers: 10% off plus 2% back.
Promo code opportunities
Harrods doesn’t issue official public codes. The “20% off Harrods” codes on coupon aggregators are community-submitted, mostly expired, and any code not listed on the portal voids cashback. The newsletter promises “exclusive discounts” but has no fixed welcome code. Skip the code hunt and wait for a Rewards event instead.
Best time of year to buy
Duties, shipping, and returns
- VAT: the 20% UK VAT is removed from US prices. This is why a British brand (Burberry, Mulberry, Barbour, Turnbull & Asser) can land cheaper than US retail even after duty.
- Duty: the US ended the $800 de minimis exemption for all countries on August 29, 2025, so every order is dutiable. Harrods calculates and collects it at checkout (DDP). The rate depends on the item’s country of origin and material, not on the fact that it shipped from the UK. Budget 10-30% on apparel and leather.
- Shipping: $30 standard, four to seven business days, DHL only.
- Returns: 14 days from delivery, free DHL label, duties refunded.
- Can’t ship to the US: certain beauty, grooming, fragrance, food, wine, and hampers.
Common exclusions
- Cashback is on item price only; duties and shipping don’t earn
- Food, furniture, pre-owned Rolex, and gift cards earn nothing on either portal
- Orders on the UK site or shipped to the UK don’t track on the US portals
- Rewards points can’t be redeemed on US-shipped orders
- Fine jewelry, watches, and the Food Halls are excluded from Rewards events
- Any code not listed on the portal voids cashback
Checkout sequence
- Make sure you're on the US site (harrods.com/en-us). Prices should show in dollars.
- Build a test cart and read the checkout total with duties and shipping. Compare it to US retail for the same item. If Harrods doesn't win, stop here.
- Check whether a Rewards Exclusive event is running or imminent. If it is, sign in to your Rewards account first.
- Clean session, ad blockers off. Activate Rakuten or TopCashback and click through to harrods.com. Confirm you land on the US site.
- Rebuild the cart. Don't apply any coupon-site code.
- Pay with a no-foreign-transaction-fee card.
- Confirm the portal shows the order pending within 48 hours.
$1,500 leather bag, 15% assumed duty
During a 10% Rewards event: item $1,350, duty about $203, shipping $30, cashback $27, landed about $1,556. The event is worth roughly $170 on this order; the portal is worth $30. Wait for the event.

The 10% events are short (the last one ran July 30 to August 2) and aren't announced far ahead. We email the day one goes live.
