Retailer overview
SSENSE is the Montreal luxury e-commerce retailer founded in 2003 by brothers Rami, Bassel, and Firas Atallah. It carries more than 500 brands across a wider range than most competitors, from Rick Owens and Comme des Garçons to Jacquemus, Loewe, and New Balance, and ships to the US on an express, duties-included basis.
The company had a hard 2025. It filed for protection under Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act on August 28, 2025, with roughly C$371 million in debt, and cited US tariffs and the August 29 end of the US$800 de minimis exemption as the trigger. The founders won the court-run sale process against a lender group that wanted to liquidate; their bid was approved February 4, 2026 and closed February 13. Headcount is down from about 1,160 to roughly 760. The site kept shipping throughout, but the restructuring shows up in one place that matters here: the portal layer, which had been a normal 2-8% before the filing, is now mostly gone.
Compared with Farfetch (15% welcome code, TopCashback 4.5% on sale items) and Mr Porter ($100 Amex Offer, 10% code, 7% portal), SSENSE has the thinnest stack of the three and the deepest sale.
Cashback portal strategy
| Portal | Current rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Capital One Shopping | 2.5% | “Not eligible for sale items.” A third-party rate tracker showed 1% on September 14, 2026; confirm in the extension before you click |
| Rakuten | No Cash Back | Store page exists and lists coupons, but no rate as of September 15, 2026 |
| TopCashback | Not verified | Store page exists (9 reviews); no rate rendered when we read it, and no rate appears on CashbackMonitor |
This is the weakest portal layer of any luxury retailer we cover. The only rate we could confirm is Capital One Shopping’s, and it excludes exactly the purchases you’d want to make. Full-price orders get 2.5% and nothing else; sale orders get nothing.
Rakuten has paid on SSENSE in the past, and Rakuten’s page is still live with a “No Cash Back” flag rather than a 404, which usually means the merchant relationship is paused rather than dead. If a rate reappears, it will most likely be during a sale window, and the sale-item exclusion may or may not follow. We’ll update the table when it does.

Credit card / Amex Offer strategy
No Amex Offer or Chase Offer on ssense.com surfaced for 2025 or 2026 in any of the places these normally get logged (Doctor of Credit, Frequent Miler, r/amex, Slickdeals). Given the company spent the back half of 2025 in creditor protection, that’s not surprising; card-issuer offers need a merchant with marketing budget.
SSENSE codes as a clothing store. No category bonus applies on the travel cards. Pay with whatever earns your best flat rate, and prefer a card with purchase protection given the order values and the company’s recent history. If an Amex or Chase Offer does appear, it would be a statement credit and would stack with the sale price and with Capital One Shopping; add it before checkout and pay with that card.
Sale access and discount programs
Private sale. This is SSENSE’s real loyalty program, and it has no name and no signup. About a week before each public sale, customers who placed an order in the previous six months see 20-40% markdowns when signed in. The November 2024 private sale opened around November 13 at 20-40% off; the May 2025 public sale followed on May 19 at up to 50%. If you were planning to buy something full price anyway, buying it in the spring keeps you eligible for the fall private sale, where sizes are still intact.
Price protection. 14 calendar days from the order date. If the item is marked down and still in stock in your size, contact Customer Care and the difference goes back to the original card. One adjustment per item. This is the one mechanism that lets a full-price buyer catch the sale: if the private sale is roughly two weeks out, a full-price order now with Capital One Shopping’s 2.5%, then a price-protection claim when the markdown lands, gets you both.
Promo codes. SSENSE’s own policy page says “only one code may be applied per order” and “items previously discounted (i.e. sale items) may not be eligible for further discount.” The company issues codes rarely and by targeted email, not publicly. The 15-30% codes on coupon aggregators are expired targeted codes or affiliate placeholders; we didn’t find one that verified.
Not found: a student discount (Student Beans’ SSENSE page links to the public sale and the free-shipping thresholds, nothing more; UNiDAYS doesn’t list it), a military discount, a referral program, a points program, an outlet, a newsletter signup code.
Best time of year to buy
The pattern is consistent: 30-40% at open, 50-60% after the first cut, up to 70% in the final weeks. Sizes and the pieces people actually want go at the private-sale tier. If you want a specific item, buy at 30-40%; if you’re browsing, wait for 60-70%.
Common exclusions and fine print
- Capital One Shopping excludes sale items, which is where the discount lives
- Rakuten currently pays nothing; TopCashback’s rate couldn’t be read
- One promo code per order; sale items generally can’t take a code
- Price protection is 14 days from the order date, once per item, and doesn’t apply to coupon-eligible items
- US orders include estimated duties on the invoice (DDP); free US shipping at $100 full price or $300 otherwise, $14 below that, $17 flat on restricted items
- 30-day returns with free US return shipping; no exchanges; final sale, fragrance, candles, and battery items can’t be returned
- A returned order cancels any portal cashback on it
Checkout sequence
- Check whether a sale is open. Sign in first: private-sale pricing only shows to eligible signed-in accounts.
- If the item is full price and the next sale is within two weeks, note the price-protection window before you decide.
- Check Amex Offers and Chase Offers across your cards on the off chance one has appeared.
- Full-price order: activate Capital One Shopping and click through. Sale order: skip it (excluded), and check Rakuten's ssense.com page in case a rate has returned.
- Build the cart. Don't paste a coupon-site code; it won't work and one code per order is the rule anyway.
- Pay with a card that has purchase protection. Duties are already on the invoice; there's nothing to pay on delivery.
- Full price only: set a reminder for day 13 and check the item's price. If it dropped, contact Customer Care for the adjustment.
$1,000 full-price item, two ways
Path B plus a price-protection claim if the item is marked down 30% within 14 days: $700 net, and the $25 cashback usually survives because it was earned on the original transaction. Duties and tax are extra on both paths and are shown at checkout.
Get alerted when the SSENSE sale opens or a portal rate returns.
The private sale gives recent customers about a week's head start on sizes. We email the day it goes live, the day markdowns deepen, and the day Rakuten or TopCashback lists a rate again.

Ready to buy?
If you bought anything in the last six months, wait for the private sale email in November. If not, the public sale a week later. Full price only if you can't wait, with Capital One Shopping and the 14-day price-protection window in your favor.
