Hotels.com is an online travel agency, which changes the math in two directions at once. In its favor: it sits on every cashback portal, TopCashback pays up to 10% on completed stays, and signed-in members see prices 10% or more below the public rate at a lot of properties. Against it: you give up hotel points and elite treatment, One Key has been cut twice in three years, and only prepaid bookings track. This page covers the stack, and when to skip it.

Prepaid only: every portal and every Amex Offer on Hotels.com has required the Pay Now option. A pay-at-property booking earns One Key but no cashback.

Retailer overview

Hotels.com is Expedia Group’s hotel-first storefront. Same inventory engine as Expedia, same One Key loyalty program, same Amex Offer link pattern. It used to be the best hotel loyalty program in the OTA world (stay ten nights, get one free, about 10% back). That ended in 2023, and the replacement has been cut again since, so the reason to book here in 2026 is not loyalty. It is the combination of cashback portals, Member Prices, and the occasional Amex or Capital One offer, on a property where you were not going to earn hotel points anyway.

That last clause is the whole decision. If the hotel is an independent, a boutique, or a chain you have no status with, Hotels.com can be 10 to 13% cheaper than direct once the layers land. If it is a Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, or IHG where you hold status or want the points, book direct and use those pages instead.

Cashback portal strategy

Portal Current rate Base Notes
TopCashback Up to 10% on completed stays (was 5-7%) Calculated on the room price only, excluding taxes and fees. Tracks in about 7 days, pays after the stay. Cancelled reservations earn nothing. Unlisted coupon codes void it.
Rakuten 3% on hotel stays; 1% on car rentals 1% Pays “within 3 months after travel has been completed.” No cashback when a coupon code is used, none on airfare or gift cards. US and Canada members only.
Capital One Shopping Up to 1% on completed stays 1% Ran 14% and 15% Hotels.com days in 2026 (the last one on August 28). Codes not provided by Capital One void it. Pays roughly 45 days after checkout.

Two rules apply on every portal. First, cashback is earned on completed stays, so a booking made in March for December sits pending for nine months and a cancellation pays zero. Second, every Hotels.com offer we have seen, portal or card, has been written around the Pay Now option. Rakuten and TopCashback do not spell out pay-at-property, but the Amex Offers do exclude it, and we have found no report of a pay-at-property booking tracking. Book prepaid or assume no cashback.

TopCashback is the better resting rate by a wide margin. Rakuten earns its place on the spike days: it ran a 10x travel day on February 24, 2026 that included Expedia and a 15x retail event that included Hotels.com, and those days beat everyone.

Credit card and Amex Offer strategy

Hotels.com codes as travel, which sounds good until you read the 2026 card terms. The Sapphire Reserve’s 4x is for “flights and hotels booked direct,” so an OTA booking earns 1x. The Amex Platinum’s 5x is only on Amex Travel prepaid hotels, so it earns 1x here too. The Amex Gold’s 3x is flights only.

The cards that actually bonus Hotels.com are the ones with a flat all-travel category: the Sapphire Preferred at 2x and the Venture X at 2x. A plain 2% cash card is equivalent. If you hold the Reserve and the Preferred, this is a Preferred purchase.

Amex Offers. Hotels.com gets a targeted Amex Offer about once a year, always through a dedicated link (hotels.com/amex, or hotels.com/amexbusiness for business cards):

  • July to October 14, 2025: 8% back as a statement credit on prepaid stays, up to $90.
  • June 1 to August 31, 2026: “Earn 10% back as a statement credit after using your enrolled eligible Card to make qualifying pre-paid hotel purchases online at hotels.com/amex,” limit $100.

Both excluded pay-at-property and phone orders, and both said third-party cashback, promo codes, coupons, and browser extensions invalidate the offer. That makes the Amex Offer a fork, not a stack: on a $1,000 stay, 10% back ($100) on the full charge beats TopCashback’s up to 10% on the room rate alone (about $85), so take the offer and skip the portal. On a $3,000 stay the offer caps at $100 while TopCashback pays up to $255, so book through the portal on your Preferred instead. The crossover is around $1,200. There is no live Hotels.com Amex Offer as of September 16, 2026, and we could not find a Chase Offer at Hotels.com in 2025 or 2026.

Capital One Offers. The spring 2026 rotation carried a 10,000-mile bonus on $325 at Hotels.com (and 15,000 on $450 at Expedia). Those post through Capital One’s own click-through and do not combine with Rakuten or TopCashback either; they follow the same fork logic.

One Key and Member Prices

One Key is the shared program for Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. Earning is OneKeyCash on the booking amount excluding taxes and fees, credited after the stay. As of July 28, 2026 the rates are tiered: Blue 1%, Silver 2%, Gold 2%, Platinum 3%. Silver takes five trip elements in a year, Gold fifteen, Platinum thirty. The same change ended flight earning on Expedia and removed the Hotel Price Guarantee from both sites.

The history matters because you will see stale numbers on coupon sites. Hotels.com Rewards paid roughly 10% until 2023. One Key launched at 2% flat. The July 2026 cut took base members to 1%, a 90% devaluation in three years. The UK and several European markets were moved back to a stamp-based Hotels.com Rewards in 2026, and Canada never fully left it; the US stays on One Key.

OneKeyCash expires after 18 months without an eligible booking or redemption, redeems only on Pay Now bookings (pay-at-property earns it but cannot spend it), and, as far as anyone has reported, tracks independently of portal cashback. Rakuten’s exclusions do not mention it.

Member Prices are the layer worth more than One Key earning. Hotels.com’s own coupon page says signing in gets “10% or more on thousands of hotels,” and coupon aggregators report deeper Member Prices at Silver (15%+) and Gold and Platinum (20%+). These are price reductions, not codes, so they survive the portal click. Sign in before you search.

Coupon codes

Hotels.com does issue real codes (a verified student, teacher, and military 10% code was running this summer), but they are the wrong tool for a stacker. The exclusions page bars Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Wyndham, Choice, Accor, Best Western, and most luxury brands; codes apply only to prepaid bookings, never to taxes or fees, one per booking; and using one voids Rakuten, TopCashback, and Capital One Shopping. A 10% code and TopCashback’s up to 10% are roughly a wash on an eligible independent hotel, so check the rate TopCashback shows for your booking, pick one, and do not try to have both.

Best time to book

Portal spike days
Rakuten's 10x and 15x events (February 24, 2026 was one) and Capital One Shopping's 14 to 15% Hotels.com days (August 28, 2026 was the latest). Both are announced the morning of and last a day or two.
10-15%
Amex Offer season
The last two offers ran July to October 2025 and June to August 2026. If you are targeted, a 10% back offer capped at $100 beats the portal on stays under about $1,200.
8-10%, capped
TopCashback resting rate
Up to 10% on completed prepaid stays as of September 16, 2026, up from the 5 to 7% it paid over the summer. Read the rate on the store page before you click; "up to" means some bookings pay less.
Up to 10%
Last-minute deals
Hotels.com's own last-minute section runs 20 to 35% off select stays inside a few days of check-in, and those rates are still portal-eligible if they are Pay Now.
20-35%

Common exclusions and fine print

  • No hotel points, no elite benefits. A chain hotel booked through Hotels.com does not earn Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, Hilton Honors, or IHG points, and status perks (upgrades, breakfast, late checkout, elite-night credit) are not owed to third-party bookings. Compare against the direct stack on our Hyatt and Marriott pages before booking a chain here.
  • Cashback is calculated on the room price. Taxes, resort fees, and property fees are excluded on every portal.
  • Prepaid only. Pay-at-property bookings earn OneKeyCash but no portal cashback and no Amex Offer credit.
  • Cancelled bookings earn nothing, on any portal. Cashback posts after checkout: Rakuten says within three months, Capital One Shopping about 45 days, TopCashback after the return window.
  • Coupon codes void portal cashback. Member Prices and OneKeyCash redemptions do not.
  • Airfare, gift cards, packages, group bookings, and car rentals are excluded from the Amex Offers; Rakuten pays nothing on airfare and 1% on cars.
  • The Hotel Price Guarantee is gone as of July 28, 2026. If the rate drops after you book, your only move is a free-cancellation rate you can cancel and rebook (which resets the portal click and the pending cashback).
  • Sapphire Reserve cardholders: the card’s own hotel price-match benefit applies to bookings through Chase Travel, not to Hotels.com.

Worked example

The math

$1,000 prepaid stay at an independent hotel: $850 room rate, $150 taxes and fees

Member Price already applied10%+ off the public rate
TopCashback up to 10% on $850up to −$85.00
Sapphire Preferred 2x on $1,000 (2,000 pts)−$20 to $40
One Key Blue 1% on $850, after the stay−$8.50
Total value backup to $114 to $134 (11-13%)

If a 10% Amex Offer is live, the same stay returns $100 from Amex plus 2,000 points on the Preferred, with no portal: $120 to $140 back. Take the offer below about $1,200 in spend and the portal above it.

Checkout sequence

  1. Decide direct versus OTA first. If the property is a chain where you hold status or want the points, stop here and book direct.
  2. Sign in to Hotels.com so Member Prices show. Check the app for any app-only rate, then note the price.
  3. Check Amex Offers. If a Hotels.com offer is live and your stay is under about $1,200, book through hotels.com/amex on that card and skip the portal.
  4. Otherwise, open a clean desktop browser, activate TopCashback (or Rakuten on a 10x or 15x day), and click through to hotels.com.
  5. Choose a Pay Now rate, ideally with free cancellation. Leave the coupon field empty.
  6. Pay with the Sapphire Preferred, Venture X, or a 2% card. Not the Reserve, not the Platinum.
  7. Confirm the click tracked within a week. Cashback and OneKeyCash both post after checkout, so do not cancel and rebook unless the price drop is larger than the pending cashback.

FAQ

Does Rakuten work on Hotels.com?
Yes, but the rate is modest. Rakuten lists "up to 3%" on completed hotel stays (1% on car rentals), up from a 1% base, and pays within three months after travel. TopCashback's up to 10% is the better resting rate; Rakuten is worth using on its 10x and 15x spike days.
Does pay-at-property earn cashback?
No portal has confirmed it, and every Hotels.com Amex Offer has explicitly excluded it. Treat cashback as prepaid-only. Pay-at-property does still earn OneKeyCash, but you cannot redeem OneKeyCash on it.
Should I book a Hyatt or Marriott through Hotels.com?
Usually not. Chain hotels booked through an OTA earn no hotel points, no elite-night credit, and no status benefits (upgrades, breakfast, late checkout), and Hotels.com coupons exclude those chains anyway. The portal rate (up to 10%) rarely beats what a mid-tier elite gives up. Our Hyatt and Marriott pages cover the direct stack.
Which card earns the most on Hotels.com?
A card that bonuses all travel. The Sapphire Preferred earns 2x, as does the Venture X. The Sapphire Reserve's 4x is for "flights and hotels booked direct," so it drops to 1x on an OTA, and the Amex Platinum earns 1x here too.
Do Hotels.com coupon codes void cashback?
Yes. Rakuten's terms say cashback is not available when a coupon code is used, and TopCashback and Capital One Shopping void on codes they did not list. Member Prices are not codes and stack fine.
What happened to One Key?
Two cuts. In 2023 Hotels.com Rewards (a free night per ten, roughly 10%) became 2% OneKeyCash. On July 28, 2026 base-tier earning fell to 1%, flight earning ended, and the Hotel Price Guarantee was dropped. Canada and parts of Europe got the old stamp program back; the US did not.
Is there still a price guarantee?
No. Expedia Group removed the Hotel Price Guarantee from Hotels.com and Expedia on July 28, 2026 with no replacement.
