The best way to book Expedia in 2026

Retailer overview

Expedia is the full-service storefront of the Expedia Group: hotels, flights, packages, cars, cruises, and activities under one login, sharing the One Key loyalty program with Hotels.com and Vrbo. The reason to book here in 2026 is not loyalty. One Key has been cut twice since it launched in 2023, base members now earn 1% on hotels and nothing on flights, and the Hotel Price Guarantee is gone. The reason is the combination of cashback portals, Member Prices, and the roughly twice-a-year Amex Offer, on a hotel where you were not going to earn chain points anyway.

That last clause decides the whole page. If the property is an independent, a boutique, a resort with no loyalty program, or a chain you hold no status with, Expedia can be 8 to 13% cheaper than direct once the layers land. If it is a Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, or IHG where you want the points or the elite treatment, book direct and use those pages. And flights are a different product entirely: every portal pays a flat dollar or two, and One Key pays nothing, so book flights with the airline.

Cashback portal strategy

Two rules apply everywhere. Cashback is earned on completed travel, so a stay booked in March for December sits pending for nine months, and a cancellation pays nothing. And every Expedia offer we have read, portal or card, is written around the Pay Now option. Rakuten and TopCashback do not spell out pay-at-property; the Amex Offers exclude it in writing; and we found no report of a pay-later booking tracking. Book prepaid or assume no cashback.

TopCashback is the resting-rate winner by a wide margin, and the 10% new-customer rate is worth saving for a larger stay. Rakuten earns its place on the spike days, which have been frequent: 12% at Expedia on November 4, 2025 (day four of its holiday Big Deal Reveal), 10x on hotel bookings over Black Friday weekend November 28 to 30, 2025, and 10x across travel sites on February 24, 2026. On those days Rakuten beats everyone, and it is the portal that can pay in Amex Membership Rewards points instead of cash.

Credit card and Amex Offer strategy

Expedia codes as travel, which sounds good until you read the 2026 card terms. The Sapphire Reserve’s 4x is for “flights and hotels booked direct,” so an OTA booking earns 1x. The Amex Platinum’s 5x is for Amex Travel prepaid hotels and airfare booked direct or through Amex Travel, so it earns 1x here too. The Amex Gold’s 3x is flights only, and only direct or Amex Travel.

The cards that actually bonus Expedia are the flat all-travel cards: the Sapphire Preferred at 2x and the Venture X at 2x. A 2% cash card is equivalent. If you hold both Chase cards, this is a Preferred purchase.

The One Key cards. Wells Fargo issues two Expedia co-brands. The no-fee One Key Card earns 3% in OneKeyCash at Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo (also 3% on gas, dining, and groceries, 1.5% elsewhere) and grants Silver status, so hotels earn 2% instead of 1% on top of the card’s 3%. The $99 One Key+ Card earns the same 3%, 2% elsewhere, grants Gold status, and returns $100 OneKeyCash each anniversary plus a $120 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. Welcome bonuses in 2026 have been $300 OneKeyCash on $1,000 spend (One Key) and $350 on $3,000 (One Key+), down from $400 in late 2025. Either card’s 3% beats the Preferred’s 2x on the booking itself, but it pays in OneKeyCash, which expires after 18 months of inactivity and only spends inside the Expedia Group. The card’s 3% posts alongside portal cashback; the card spend is not a coupon.

Amex Offers. Expedia gets a targeted Amex Offer roughly every six months, always through expedia.com/amex:

• Late 2025 to February 2, 2026: 10% back as a statement credit on prepaid hotel purchases, max $120 (some cardholders saw $125 or $150).
• May 5 to August 4, 2026: “Earn 10% back as a statement credit after using your enrolled eligible Card to make purchases of prepaid hotel bookings online at expedia.com/amex,” max $125.

Both required the Pay Now option and excluded pay-at-property, phone orders, cruises, vacation packages, flights, car rentals, activities, and trip insurance. Frequent Miler readers reported that activating a portal browser extension on top of the expedia.com/amex link tracked on both, but the terms are written as direct-purchase-only, so we treat this as a fork rather than a stack: on a $1,000 stay, 10% back ($100) beats TopCashback 6% ($60), so take the offer. On a $3,000 stay the offer caps at $125 while TopCashback pays $180, so book through the portal on your Preferred instead. There is no live Expedia Amex Offer as of September 15, 2026, and we could not find a Chase Offer at Expedia in 2025 or 2026 (Chase’s own travel portal is built on Expedia, which is probably why).

Capital One Offers. The spring 2026 rotation carried a targeted 15,000-mile bonus on $450 at Expedia. Those post through Capital One’s own click-through and do not combine with Rakuten or TopCashback; same fork logic.

One Key and Member Prices

One Key is the shared program for Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. Earning is OneKeyCash on the booking amount excluding taxes and fees, credited after travel. As of July 28, 2026 hotel earning is tiered: Blue 1%, Silver 2%, Gold 2%, Platinum 3%. Silver takes five trip elements in a calendar year, Gold fifteen, Platinum thirty, and a trip element is a hotel night, a Vrbo night, a flight, a car-rental day, or an activity worth $25 or more. Flights stopped earning on the same date (they paid 0.2% before), and on a flight-plus-hotel package only the hotel portion earns. VIP Access properties pay elite multipliers on top: roughly 3% Silver, 4% Gold, 6% Platinum.

The history matters because coupon sites still quote stale numbers. One Key launched in 2023 at 2% flat on hotels. The July 2026 change halved that for base members. The same change removed the Hotel Price Guarantee from Expedia and Hotels.com with no replacement, and added a flight-delay lounge perk for Gold and Platinum members arriving later in 2026.

OneKeyCash expires after 18 months without an earn, redemption, or transfer. It redeems on Pay Now bookings only (pay-at-property earns it but cannot spend it), a flight must be paid entirely in OneKeyCash or not at all, and, as far as anyone has reported, it tracks independently of portal cashback. Rakuten’s exclusions do not mention it.

Member Prices are worth more than One Key earning. Expedia’s own page says signed-in members “save 10% or more on over 500,000 stays,” and the app adds “up to 20% on select hotels.” AwardWallet reports higher tiers see up to 20% at around 10,000 properties. These are price reductions, not codes, so they survive the portal click. Sign in before you search, and check the app before you book on desktop.

Coupon codes

Expedia issues real codes (an app-only 10% hotel coupon is the recurring one), but they are the wrong tool for a stacker. The coupon terms exclude Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Accor, Best Western, Choice, Wyndham, Radisson, and most luxury groups (Belmond, Mandarin Oriental, One&Only, Peninsula, Shangri-La); apply only to prepaid bookings, never to taxes or fees, one per transaction, on the cheapest room in a multi-room booking; and the terms state the booking is “not eligible for rewards points/mileage/cashback.” Rakuten’s Expedia page says the same thing from the other side. A 10% app code beats TopCashback 6% on an eligible independent, so run that comparison, but do not try to have both.

Best time to book

Black Friday is the one week Expedia and the portals move together. In 2025 the sale ran November 20 through December 2 (Black Friday November 28, Cyber Monday December 1, Travel Tuesday December 2), with up to 50% off “thousands of hotels” for signed-in members, 24 daily flash deals reaching 75% off, and travel valid through December 30, 2026. Rakuten layered 10x on Expedia hotel bookings on November 28 to 30, on the heels of its 12% Expedia day on November 4 during the holiday Big Deal Reveal. There was no Amex Offer live that week; the winter offer appeared in early January. Expect the same shape in 2026: sale opens around November 19, Black Friday is November 27, and Rakuten’s travel multipliers land on the Friday through Sunday. The move is to shortlist a free-cancellation Member Price stay during the sale, then book the day Rakuten’s rate spikes.

Common exclusions and fine print

• No hotel points, no elite benefits. A chain hotel booked through Expedia earns no Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, Hilton Honors, or IHG points, and status perks are not owed on a third-party booking. Compare against the direct stack on our Hyatt and Marriott pages first.
• Flights are a dead end. Portals pay $1.25 to $2.50 flat, One Key pays 0%, and Amex Offers exclude them. Book with the airline.
• Cashback is calculated on the room price. Taxes, resort fees, and property fees are excluded on every portal.
• Prepaid only. Pay-at-property bookings earn OneKeyCash but no confirmed portal cashback and no Amex Offer credit.
• Cancelled bookings earn nothing, and cashback posts after travel: Rakuten within a week of checkout, TopCashback after the stay completes, Capital One Shopping after checkout.
• Coupon codes void portal cashback and, per Expedia’s own terms, OneKeyCash. Member Prices and OneKeyCash redemptions do not.
• Cruises are excluded on Rakuten and TopCashback. Packages earn a reduced rate, and only the hotel portion earns One Key.
• The Hotel Price Guarantee is gone as of July 28, 2026. If the rate drops, your only move is a free-cancellation rate you cancel and rebook, which resets the portal click.
• Sapphire Reserve cardholders: the card’s hotel benefits apply to Chase Travel bookings, not to Expedia.com, even though Chase Travel runs on Expedia.

Worked example

If a 10% Amex Offer is live, the same stay returns $100 from Amex plus 2,000 Preferred points, with no portal: $120 to $140 back. Take the offer below about $2,000 in spend and the portal above it. On a Rakuten 10x day the portal line becomes $85 and Rakuten wins outright.

Checkout sequence

1. Decide direct versus OTA first. Flights go direct with the airline. A chain hotel where you hold status or want the points goes direct too.
2. Sign in to Expedia so Member Prices show. Check the app for the app-only rate, then note the price.
3. Check Amex Offers. If an Expedia offer is live and your stay is under about $2,000, book through expedia.com/amex on that card and skip the portal.
4. Otherwise, open a clean desktop browser, activate TopCashback (or Rakuten on a spike day), and click through to expedia.com.
5. Choose a Pay Now rate, ideally with free cancellation. Leave the coupon field empty.
6. Pay with the Sapphire Preferred, Venture X, a One Key card, or a 2% card. Not the Reserve, not the Platinum.
7. Confirm the click tracked within a week. Cashback and OneKeyCash both post after checkout, so do not cancel and rebook unless the price drop exceeds the pending cashback.
